Vedtegninger: har Løsn.Act. 15/2 75. 1885 § 13-1 Queensland. 1886 § 13-2. 1887 § 13-3. 1883. Waldemar was born on 29th September 1862 in Haderslev, Denmark, about 25 km south of Kolding. He was the third of seven children of Lars Nielsen and Petrine Caroline Lauritzen. He left Denmark at the age of 20 and sailed to Australia on the sailing ship "Waroonga", out of Plymouth, England. The ship sailed down the west coast of Africa north of the equator and down the east coast of South America south of the equator. At about latitude 40°S she turned east and sailed south of Africa and Australia, north into the Tasman Sea and then along the east coast of Australia. Immigration records show that Waldemar arrived in Brisbane on the 13th June 1883, so he probably reached Townsville about a week later. I was told by older relatives that his brother Lauritz, who had arrived in 1879, was not in Townsville to meet him, and this caused some ill feeling between them for years after. Waldemar settled in Townsville and Lauritz in the lower Burdekin area, 80km to the south. Waldemar got a job with a transport company operating between the port of Townsville and the growing inland communities, especially the gold-mining town of Ravenswood and later, Charters Towers. There was great demand for timber, which was carried on large wagons drawn by bullock teams, often over rough terrain. He was naturalized on 12th December 1888 and from that date he could legally own land in Queensland. For much of his life he owned a property in Wilson Street, now adjoining the West End State School, where he had "a large yard where he kept drays and draught horses". One allotment remained in family ownership until it was acquired by the City Council for the Sturt Street Cutting project. The land is now a short connecting road called O'Brien Street. O'Brien was the married surname of his daughter, Doris May Nielsen. In his later years, Waldemar was described as "stubborn", "cranky"and "arrogant", but he also missed the family he left behind in Denmark, especially his mother, and sometimes became very melancholy grieving for his "sweet Carlina." Physically, he was a small, thin man with "a shock of white hair," but wiry and fit from many years of hard work. He was buried in Townsville Cemetery. His wife Antonie died on 18th June 1953 at the age of 84. Their grave sites are registered as 11/10/F and 10/10/F respectively but there are no monuments.
